Nursing Practice 3 (NP3) is the third clinically focussed unit and builds on the foundations established in Nursing Practice 2 (NP2) and Nursing Practice 1 (NP1). The unit incorporates assessment that prepares students for professional registration as well as enhancing student understanding of the registered nurse as a professional, legal accountability, reflection in practice, clinical reasoning, and teamwork. This unit has a focus on respiratory, mental health and trauma assessment and management and end of life care. It will integrate anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology of acute and chronic conditions and pharmacology to further develop the students understanding of nursing practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate safe nursing care in the simulated environment by assessing for, identifying and responding to health deterioration, including management of shock states and the administration of blood products;
2. Articulate the relationship between evidence-based practice and quality patient outcomes, person-centred care and the promotion of health;
3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of nursing assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation with a focus on mental health and wellbeing, palliative care and end of life care;
4. Demonstrate the ability to work at the scope of practice commensurate for Nursing Practice 3;
5. Synthesise nursing knowledge and clinical reasoning to provide co-ordinated, safe patient care in partnership with people, families, and carers to achieve co-created goals; and
6. Formulate a professional development and learning plan which supports readiness for the transition to practice year.
