Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Evaluate the mechanical factors that influence human movement;
2. Appraise the biomechanics of the human musculoskeletal system with particular emphasis on joint function; and
3. Conduct a qualitative biomechanical analysis and formulate meaningful feedback concerning technique modification.

Required texts
There are many biomechanics textbooks available that will contain chapters similar to the topics that are covered over the course of the semester. Such texts are likely to supplement and support your learning. As such, although not a requirement of the unit, students are encouraged to engage with any additional readings or texts that assist understanding of the subject matter. The below two texts are recommended for students of 6834 as they are clear and provide easy to understand examples:
-
McGinnis, P.M. (2020). Biomechanics of sport and exercise (4th ed.). Human Kinetics
-
Hall, S.J. (2022). Basic Biomechanics (9th ed.). McGraw-Hill Education.
Both textbooks are available for purchase on the School Locker website and available for short loan at the Library.
Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Artificial intelligence
Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit, except for Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.
GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:
- the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
- the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
- the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.
Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.
The Library Guide provides further information, including how to reference GenAI.
Special assessment requirements
Students are required to achieve an overall unit grade of 50% to pass the unit.
Moderation
All grades for each assessment item will be moderated in accordance with the Faculty of Health moderation policy.
Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.
Academic integrity involves the ethical, honest and responsible use, creation and sharing of information. It is critical to the quality of higher education. Our academic integrity values are honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility and courage.
UC students have to complete the annually to learn about academic integrity and to understand the consequences of academic integrity breaches (or academic misconduct).
UC uses various strategies and systems, including detection software, to identify potential breaches of academic integrity. Suspected breaches may be investigated, and action can be taken when misconduct is found to have occurred.
Information is provided in the , , and 91看片神器 (Student Conduct) Rules 2023. For further advice, visit Study Skills.
Participation requirements
All lectures are pre-recorded and available to students on the Biomechanics 1 Canvas site. Students should review weekly lectures and practical resources prior to attending the intensive laboratory days scheduled in Weeks 1, 3, and 4.
On-campus attendance is expected for the intensive laboratory days.
Required IT skills
Competency using word processing, spreadsheet based software (i.e. Excel) and presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint) is required. In addition, students will be required to search relevant databases for research articles.
Students will also be required to use a video analysis software package. There are freeware options for PCs and software available on university computers. Please note if you use a Mac you will need to have access to a Windows computer to be able to download the required motion analysis software. More details will be placed on Canvas.
Work placement, internships or practicums

CONTACTING THE UNIT CONVENOR
Students with general questions about the unit content and assessment should attend the drop in sessions with the unit convener in the scheduled consultation time (advertised on Canvas) and/or use the discussion forums on the unit Canvas site. Students that post to the discussion forum should expect a reply or confirmation from the unit convenor within 1-2 business days.
Please do not ask unit content or assessment item questions via email. If students do need to send an email:
- The email must be sent from the student's UC email account. Correspondence from personal email addresses cannot be responded to.
- The subject line must include the unit code and context of the message (e.g. 6834 Assessment 1)
- The student must address the unit convenor appropriately by name
- The question or request should be stated clearly and concisely
- The student should sign off with their full name and student ID number.
Emails that don't comply with these conventions will not receive a reply. Students can expect a response via email within 5 business days.
